Main task, evaluation: Q4 and Q5 ( 19/04/17 )

4) Who would be the audience for your media product? AND 5) How did you attract/address your audience?

I am going to answer questions 4 and 5 in this post, as they both connect to the concept of the audience.

My magazine, would be read by 15-25 year olds, and of a C1 culture, and although young people are typically of a D or E class, because of their parents they will share the same values, automatically classing them as C1.

My magazine will be consumed by 15-20 year olds. This is because I had gathered information about what 16-18 year olds, who read magazines and/or listen to music, would prefer and expect in an Indie Pop / Rock music magazine, in a questionnaire during my research, which is what I based the design and content of my product on. I believe the age range would be broader than 16-18 year olds, because by putting images of my magazine on Instagram and sent through WhatsApp, I gained feedback from a variety of ages, including 15, 19, 17, 16 and 20 year olds, whom all provided, mostly, positive feedback. This also explains how I attracted the audience, as I placed images of my magazine on social media, which is used by the younger generation, so will be noticed more by them than if it were placed on, say, a poster, as this audience is stereotypically ‘glued’ to their phones and any form of social media, compared to an older generation.
This along with the type of artists featured; young and upcoming, who are ambitious to peruse a career, which would be an inspiration to the younger generation whom are beginning to starting to work towards their career. Additionally, like I mentioned briefly in the first question, I did not include a ‘free CD’ because a target audience of this young, a CD would not be appropriate as, like I said, young people are glued to their phones, and CD players are becoming less and less common as generations pass, therefore, by not including this feature I can attract my target audience.
However, some people may say that the audience would be of the older generation, this is because of the feature of vinyl’s, that is mentioned throughout the magazine; on the contents page in terms of images and on the double spread article where it is mentioned that the artist is releasing a vinyl version of their album.

But it is becoming apparent that vinyl’s and turntables are ‘coming back in fashion’, in particular within the genre I am addressing in my magazine; Indie pop, as artists like Oh Wonder, Fleetwood Mac and even Harry Styles, whose new album is being compared to the likes of David Bowie, release and are releasing vinyl versions of their albums and singles. So, the concept of the vinyl’s is directed towards the fans of Indie Pop/ Rock, and a way to attract that niche audience of my magazine.
In terms of demographics, the audience would fall under C1, this is due of many reasons.

One being the fact that they will be able to afford a monthly subscription of the magazine. Additionally, there is the concept of the photography and the arrangement of these photos that draws in a C1 class audience, in particular the meaning behind the front cover images, which I explored during the progress of my front cover post, this would be understood and inferred more by people within this class due to their stereotypically wider culture; as typically, it has been said that a higher class means a wider education.

The images in general are very professionally took, compared to say the photography of television magazines and newspapers (which lower classes would more likely read), which again, would attract a C1 audience. Lastly, people within C1, would be less likely to speak in slang, compared to a D or an E class, this is why I did not use slang in my magazine, but just slight informal language. This is to attract the C1 audience, by using words they may use.

Therefore, my audience would be 15-25 year olds in the C1 class, who listen to Indie Pop/ Rock, and I used different photography and social media means to attract this audience, as well as include aspects from the genre of music, to really draw in this niche market.

Main task, double spread article progress ( 10/02/17 )

Here, I will explain the progress of my double spread article.

The background, I chose to be grey, linking to both the contents and the front cover. I used the same font as I have been, for the name of the artists throughout the font cover and contents page, for the double spread too, to tie in this theme. The artists name covers both pages, and is followed with 'Q&A' in turquoise ( linking to the front cover ). I made the font of 'Q&A' very big and different to the rest of the text, to highlight its importance, and the difference to other interviews.
I used this particular image of the artist as he is crouched down, suggesting he is 'down to earth', allowing the readers to relate to him, in addition he is looking to the left, almost, which suggests looking to the past, which will be explored in the interview, and it is placed to the right as he will also talk a bit about his future ( i.e. where his music career will go, new music etc ). I also edited in the vinyl cover, making it look like Jordan is actually holding the vinyl.

My finished piece, in presented below in a Prezzi:

Main task, contents page progress ( 10/02/17 )

I have uploaded my progress of the contents page, and will explain each of my steps.

I began by making the background grey, this ties in with the front cover as the cover story rectangles behind the description of the cover story is grey.
I decided to headline the page 'MMM', as this is the abbreviation of 'Melody Music Magazine' and it makes the magazine more memorable and adds to the house style.
I also added two images of records, this adds to the style of the magazine, and links to the fact that in the cover story we will be discussing the artists new record.

Next, it was time to add some photography. I added an image of a male and female to emphasise that there are no certain genders that can read or be featured in the magazine. The female is the magazines 'music reviewer', and to add to the house style, I had the model hold out her right hand as if she is holding something placed in her hand, this is because I am going to insert text above her hand, to give the illusion that she is actually holding the text. The male is the same as the one on the front cover, to highlight his importance in the magazine, and I included the image of his record, of which he is holding to show that is what the article will talk about
I also added a close up image of vinyls in covers, linking to the records the models are placed on. The one vinyl which is out of place, highlights the fact that the artists talked about in the magazine will be diverse an do not sing songs of a conventional genre.

I then added text; but firstly I began with the outline of a rectangle in turquoise, but removed the top and bottom to create a column of which I started to write out what will be featured in the magazine, instead of using the word 'contents'. I simply added 'Featured' like MOJOs contents page. I made the font of the names of artists larger and different to the description, again to highlight who will be in the magazine rather than what.

Three quarters of the way down, I intersected the rectangle with another, yet the two sides were removed rather than the top and bottom, this is to highlight this articles importance, as this is the cover story. I also, used a quote from the artists interview to describe the article to allow the readers some insight of the artists before reading the article. Above this I added the headline for the other image, which like I mentioned before was a music reviewer, it does not have a certain artists name that is mentioned so the text is in the second font. Both of these I added the page numbers next to the headlines.
I also added 'Melody Music Magazine', beneath 'MMM' just to allow the readers to know what the abbreviation stands for,
-The font is all in white, to carry on the colour scheme and highlight the pureness of the music, which I have previously explored in my front cover progress post.

Main task, front cover progress ( 20/01/17 )

Whilst producing my front cover I will be uploading images of my progress, explaining my thought processes for each step.

I begun, by making the background turquoise, it is associated with refreshing, calm, spiritual grounding and intuition, I used this because having an upcoming artist on the front cover is 'refreshing' to readers, and also, the artists interview will be about how he found his 'grounding' with his connection to music, and the music he produces is very calm and very much focused on the lyrics. This also all links to the name of the magazine - Melody - which is considered calming, but is also what makes up music in general; it is a musical composition made up of single notes. I chose white as the colour for the heading as it symbolizes purity, which is what the music in the magazine will focus on; new and untouched or covered music, it can also represent a 'blank canvas' in which these new artists are beginning with, as they are making a name and reputation for themselves. In smaller writing beneath, to the right hand side, I included the phrase 'Music magazine', just to highlight that the magazine will be based around music, also I will later refer to the magazine as MMM in the contents page, which will be catchy for customers, allowing the magazine to be memorable.

When it came to the images, I used the two images I referred to in my photoshoot ideas post. I started by using the same image to be enlarged and in front, I did this with both images ( Option 1 and 2 ), however I believed that the images would have a much deeper and understandable meaning if I were to use both of the images on the front cover. So I enlarged the second image, decreased the opacity to create this ghost like effect, I placed both the faded image and the image in front, in the middle of the page, to emphasize that this artist is the main focus of the magazines edition ( Option 3 ), however the fact that only one of the eyes of the faded image was seen, did not give the meaning I was hoping for and did not fit well with the image in front. Considering this, I moved the enlarged and faded image to the right slightly ( Option 4 ), so the majority of the face could be seen, this really captures the facial expressions of the image behind, compared to the image in front, which represents the difference between his past and present self. The enlarged and faded image is to represent the artists past, which he cant escape, and the front his present self, revealing his past through adjusting his strap, this is because the artist will reveal his past through his album and talking to the magazine in the interview.  I had the artist wear dungarees as this is associated with children, and this is to emphasize a part of his personality, and highlight he will always return to his childhood hometown, which he refers to in one of the songs from his album. I also edited the faded image, by stamping out the dungarees, if I had kept these on the artist it would suggest that the artist has not changed from his past to now.

Option 1
Option 2
Option 3
Option 4 - Chosen option

I then began to add the headline of the cover story. I headlined the story 'Jordan Bruce', the name of the artist, because this is a convention of music magazine cover story headlines. I then went onto the rest of the headline, which is 'After Dancing with the Devil, this new indie artist tells us about his City Sights' I used this, as it allowed me to incorporate the names of two of the songs in his album, and also gives some insight into what the article will be about. I used two grey rectangles behind the text, this is not only to highlight the text, but to show that the article will cover any 'grey areas' the readers have about the artist, as he will be revealing information people will be wanting to know about his album. There is a common theme with magazines of using yellow and red to emphasize important information, this is why I used a red rectangle and yellow font of 'Exclusive'. I placed this text, near the bottom, so the text is not covering the artists face, and on the left to show he will be talking about his past. This is also a common place magazines allocate the cover story headline.
Cover story headline added
UPDATE: I have added a barcode, along with the names of artists that will feature in my magazine, in alternating colours of turquoise ( following the colour scheme ), and pink, which is due to the fact this was a colour associated with indie pop. I adapted this element with inspiration from Q magazine who in an edition of its magazine had names at the bottom of the page. I am going change some names on the bottom, as they will be mentioned or are mentioned already on the front cover ( i.e. Jordan Bruce ), and in a majority of music magazines artists are only really mentioned once on the front cover.

In addition, I have added two featured article headlines to the front cover. I started by adding in white, following the theme of pure and untouched music, 'TOP 10 indie singles of this month according to melody's music reviewer' which is in slightly smaller font than the cover story headline, this is because this will be there 2nd most important article in the magazine and is a recurring theme for the magazine which the consumers will look forward to, I found this evident through my questionnaire which showed that a music review would be a element most 16/17 year old's would like in a music magazine. I did not use the same font for all of the headline, apart from 'indie singles' which is in the same font has the cover story headline, this is because there is a link between these two articles as they are both going to be based around new indie pop music.  I then added the second featured headline: 'FREE download your own copy of Vance joys new single', I have chosen to include a free copy of a single as a lot of those who completed the questionnaire said they would want a free CD, however when looking at the age bracket, these people are 16-17 year old's who most probably would not own a CD player, hence why this copy will be an online copy, which consumers can download on a smart phone or any device through iTunes using a code the magazine will provide. This is in the same font as the 'of this month according to melody's music reviewer', this is because this is not a big piece of information for the magazine, it only explains what is 'FREE', which is the same for the 'according to...' element which only explains briefly about the article, also by using the same font, it carries on a theme of the style of the magazine which will ensure it doesn't look messy, but not formal at the same time. I also had the word 'FREE!' in yellow font on top of a red block, to emphasize it's importance like the cover story.

In addition to this, I altered the font of the cover story headline, by changing 'Dancing with the devil' and 'City sights' to an alternate font, which almost reflects someones handwriting, this is to highlight that these two phrases are the names of the two songs mentioned in the artists interview, and allow for some way for the consumers to relate to the article and artist, by using a more informal font.

Main task, vinyl ( 12/01/17 )

In this post I am going to talk about the vinyl cover and album I created to include in my magazine.

I began with a plan background of green ( representing new beginnings ). The heading is 'Jordan Bruce' 'Citybound', the C from Bruce is also the C for Citybound, this is to show that the city is a part of Bruce; intertwined within him, which is what album is about and what the interview will focus on too. The face the artist is looking to the left shows that he is looking to the past, this contrasts with the connotations of the green: this is to show that everything that has happened in his past has allowed him to grow and prosper; him looking to the past is him experiencing nostalgia and reflecting linking to some of the songs in the album and the green is representing his new life and growth as an individual, which is also explored in the album.
I then included the image of Big Ben submersed in fog, which represents Bruce's mind; a blur. The fact it is London is because that is where he has moved to to create music, linking to the name of the album. The time on Big Ben is 2:40, which links to one of the songs in the album which I will come on to explain. At first I just had the outline of Jordan, but it was not very clear to see, so I filled the image in with the green, this is to link in the theme of new beginnings and growth.

I have also come up with the titles of songs in the album and what they are about, this will be talked about in the interview;
Homeward Journey - This is about his mental journey looking back to his past, his childhood, and expressing his feelings when both parents died when he was only 7 in a car crash.
More than words - This song explores the idea of appearence versus reality, in terms of what he saw of his parents 'perfect relationship' but it was not as it seemed and his parents had dark secrets: his dad was a cheat and would hit his mum, but it was kept from him to protect him.
Dancing with the devil - This song focuses on a relationship the artist had, which was toxic, he knew it was toxic but stayed because he couldn't escape.
20 to 2 - Relates to Bruce dealing with his depression, unable to sleep. 20 to 2 ( AM ) is when he wrote the song, and is also the time that is on Big Ben on the front cover.
Open door - New beginnings, this represents him creating music, as each door closes in his face he opens a new door. It explores the strength to get back up when you are knocked down.
City sights - This is about where he is now- living in the city, making music. However, he is still not at his happiness as he cannot experience this with the people he would have liked to: his mum and dad.
Paragraph - From one of his favorite poems by E.E Cummings: Since feeling is first, he sings about the fact that 'Life is not a paragraph', and that it cannot be explained so simply in a few lines, and that death is not the end, memories still live on.
There are only 7 songs in the album, this is because it is at the age of 7 that Jordan Bruce's life changed; when his parents passed away. This made him turn to music as the songs he would listen to would bring him out of the sorrow.

Main task, ideas and sketches ( 12/01/17 )

This is where I will explain the ideas I have come up with for my magazine, it includes different sketches for the front cover, contents page and double spread article.

Firstly, I will describe my thought process whilst creating these different sketches of the front cover. At first I created a rough sketch of what the front page will consist off: a heading ( MELODY ), a slogan, what is featured, the headline of the cover story and a barcode and price. This was to give me a rough idea of what will be included and begin to decide where each element will be placed. I want to begin the first element of the magazines house style, by having the image of the artist on the front cover twice, first I want to enlarge and fade the image then place the image in front of the faded version, this is to create this element of the artists past always being in the back of their mind.
I have chosen the name 'Melody' for the name of my magazine, as it was one of the more common words I found people completing my questionnaire associated with Indie pop. As you can see, in all of my sketches of the front cover I have included the colour green/ turquoise, this is done for two reasons, one reason being that it was one of the colours 16 to 17 year olds associated with indie pop, but I chose green in particular as it is a representation of growth and new beginnings, which the magazine will be known for; it delves into the lives of upcoming artists, artists that are beginning to flourish and grow as an artist and as a person in general.
As I created these sketches I played about with where each element will be placed, I came to the conclusion that the image of the artist will be placed in the centre of the page; they are the main focus of the edition of the magazine, I will place the name of the magazine at the top of the page as this is a convention of magazines in general. The part that I was indecisive of was where to place what will be featured in the edition, the headline of the cover story, and who will be featured in the edition. In the end I decided to place the cover story to the left of the artist; one reason is because looking at my research it seems like this a common theme, also, the artist on the front cover will be talking about his past a lot in his interview, so the left hand side seems a productive place to put it. I have also decided to place what will be featured in the edition both sides of the artist and who is featured at the bottom, in smaller font to highlight it is not the focal point of the edition. The barcode will be placed very small in the right hand corner of the cover, as this is not an important feature for readers.

Sketch two

Next, I will go on to the sketches of the contents page. Again, I started out roughly sketching where elements will go, so in the first sketch I have included an area where it will have page numbers and what articles will be featured on these pages on the left. On the right, I will include two images, one being the artist featured on the front, with the headline of the interview, beneath this an image of an music reviewer. At the bottom of the page I have sketched the vinyls that will be at the bottom of the page, this links to the cover story as the artist would have released an album on a vinyl, the image will have one vinyl out of place which will represent how the artist feels in society and how the music he has released will represent this. It can also be interpreted as the song that the music reviewer has ranked first in her review for this months edition.
It becomes more clear that the images will be placed on record discs, to link the whole vinyl theme together, also I am going to photograph the the reviewer with her arm stretched out and palm up, placing the headline of her article on her hand, adding to the house style.
I am indecisive whether to make the heading of the page 'Melody' in large font, beneath this 'Music magazine' and to the left hand side beneath this 'Contents' ( shown in sketch two ) or to headline the page 'MMM' and beneath this 'Melody Music Magazine', and beneath this to the left hand side 'Contents' ( as shown in sketch three ).
Sketch two

Sketch three

Lastly, I will explain the sketches of my double spread article. I start with a rough sketch of the design of the double spread contents page; I will have the masthead as the name of the artist ( Jordan Bruce ), which will go across the two pages at the top. I will then have a long shot of the artist on the right page, at the right hand side, to emphasis the talk of his future, but he will be looking to the left which will also highlight the talk of his past, leading up to his music career now. In the second sketch I added the element of the phrase 'Q&A', as that is how I am going to structure the interview. I also added the feature of a quote from the artist, from the interview, by the artists head. In my sketches, I only included two columns per page, however I will actually have three columns, as this is a convention of magazines.

Main task, photoshoot ideas ( 03/01/17 )

For my magazine, I will be including a lot of photography. In this post, I am going to include the different ideas for the photos in my magazine.

Example of shot
FRONT PAGE: For the front page, I want to include a mid-shot of an individual artist whom the double spread article will be based on. The artist will be looking towards the camera as this is a recurring theme throughout magazines. I would like to attempt to enlarge and fade the image or a alternate image, then have the original image in front, to create the first element of the magazines house style. I have attached one example of the camera shot I plan to use, yet I would not include so much area behind the artist, in terms of the rule of thirds, the artist will be more centre, and the shot would not be horizontal. UPDATED: I have now included two of the images I photographed that I may use in the magazine, the first the artist is adjusting his strap of his dungarees, this is to emphasis him 'stripping' a layer of his image in the media, and revealing something about his life, through his new album and this interview. The second photo, the artist looks very stolid and serious, almost dark, this is to highlight his past which will be explored in the interview, I am hoping to be able to incorporate both these images into the front cover, by decreasing the opacity of the image behind, almost creating this ghostly element - his ghost being his past.
Image 1
Image 2

 CONTENTS PAGE:
The contents page will include, at most, three images. On will be of the artist on the cover; a long shot with an acoustic guitar. Another photo will be of the music reviewer, I will photograph her with her arm out and palm facing upwards, this is to place the text on that will headline her article: adding to the house style. Along the bottom, will be my third image, this will be an image of vinyls stacked next to each other - again adding to the house style of the magazine - this image will be similar to the one I showed in my moodboard. I have attached an example of the images I may use for the contents page of the 'music reviewer', 'artist' and vinyls which I photographed myself.
Example of 'music reviewer'
Example of vinyl photo

 DOUBLE-SPREAD ARTICLE:
The double spread article I have two options, one being two images; a long shot of the artist on the cover and an image of a vinyl - a new album of the artist. The second option being the artist holding the vinyl, in a long shot. I have attached a few examples as I played around with different positions of shots. As you can see the person on the vinyl cover does not match the one holding it, this is because I needed to have the shape of the vinyl to then place the cover I will create.

 VINYL:
I am going to create a cover for a vinyl which I will incorporate into my magazine, as mentioned above. For this, I will include an image of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament surrounded by fog, this will be edited to a have pink or blue tint ( colours associated with indie pop ), I may include a mid-shot of the artist on this too, depending on how the two images cooperate. I have attached the image of Big Ben, before and after the tint of pink, also the image of the artist I may incorporate into the cover.
